KALDI's Open Mic

Last night (Friday), my son Tim and I headed over to South Pasadena for the bi-monthly open mic at Kaldi's.  https://www.facebook.com/Thundertap#!/pages/Kaldis-Acoustic-Open-Mic/206211596063455

It's a very tiny coffee shop - room for 12ish comfortably - 20 tops...  The host Jonathan was enthusiastic, talented (but didn't play), and the open mic has a lovely cause.  It's to raise funds for kids at risk to give them a guitar accompanied by guitar lessons.  He sells these cute key chains made of a pearlescent guitar pic and a treble cleft for a suggested donation of $3.  We bought two.

The sound was fine, and we played 3 songs each.  Unfortunately, the worker for the coffee shop decided to have a tarot card reading right in the middle of my son's set.  The lady spoke on his future at full voice.  I thought it was rude.  I mentioned it to Jonathan, and he sheepishly told me there wasn't anything he could do, because the guy worked there.  He was being gracious and grateful they let him host his event there twice a month and didn't want to rock the boat.  However, when Tim's song got quiet, he stepped up and asked them to be quiet.  Thanks Jonathan!

It was a quiet event.  Tim's friend Vanita (sp?) showed up to hear Tim with her friend Sameet (sp?)
It included a coloring contest of an outline of "Jason's" mask (from the movie).  We participated and colored our little hearts out, but we didn't stick around to hear who won, as we had a date with the family for late dinner.

It was very nice, and I would recommend it to the locals, but didn't feel like my tribe.  Oh, did I mention I'm kind of on a quest to find my musical tribe?  More later as the adventure unfolds.  Thanks for reading!

LISASONGS

Good morning World Wide Web!  This is my attempt to blog about something near and dear to my heart - musicians in Southern California of a certain age and beyond, where to take the talent, who I've dealt with, what it is/was like, benefits of performing, ambiance of venues, songwriting, and everything else related... I am excited!
